  128.      If you are one of those kinds who hates to read documentation, then
  129.      hopefully this page will get you going.
  130.      
  131.      YOU MUST HAVE A FULLY FUNCTIONAL, REGISTERED, COPY OF DOORWAY
  132.      OPERATIONAL ON YOUR BBS BEFORE YOU HAVE A GHOST OF A CHANCE TO
  133.      GET THIS THING WORKING!  If DOORWAY is not installed, then get a
  134.      registered copy from DATA WORLD BBS (see software requirements), and
  135.      install it before preceding.
  136.      
  137.      Add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: SET GIFDESK=FILE and
  138.      reboot your system.
  139.      
  140.      Create a directory off of your BBS run directory called OLVIEW and
  141.      unpack the OLVIEW archive into the newly created directory.  Move the
  142.      file BEE.GIF in to one of your download directories that contains GIFs.
  143.      Move the files SHWGIF52.EXE and OLUSER.DOC into a download directory
  144.      that contains your graphics utilities and make an entry in the file
  145.      listings shown to your callers indicating the presence of the new
  146.      files.  Unpack the GIFDSK40 archive into the OLVIEW directory as
  147.      well.
  148.      
  149.      Using an ASCII editor, edit the file DIR.LST.  The first line in the
  150.      file contains text that will be displayed to your callers uniquely
  151.      identifying your board.  Edit this line as desired.  THE LENGTH OF THIS
  152.      LINE MUST BE 80 CHARACTERS, INCLUDING THE 2 DIGIT NUMBER AT THE
  153.      END OF THE LINE.  LEAVE THE NUMBER SET TO 15!  IF THIS LINE IS NOT
  154.      EXACTLY 80 CHARACTERS (TOTAL) IN LENGTH, YOUR GONNA GET INTO TROUBLE!
  155.      
  156.      Next, delete the second line in the file, as it is just an example of
  157.      the syntax used to list your download directories.  Enter the complete
  158.      path to each directory that contains GIFs on the board download
  159.      path(s).  As shown in the example line deleted in the above step, you
  160.      must provide the drive letter and colon, and the entry MUST have a
  161.      trailing backslash (i.e. C:\DOWNLOAD\GIFBIG\).  You must enter one
  162.      line for each directory available for downloading GIFs from.  If you
  163.      have 5 directories that contain GIFs available for download, your
  164.      DIR.LST file should have  6 lines.  The first line with your BBS
  165.      identifier string in it, and 5 more lines, each containing the complete
  166.      path to each download directory.
  167.      
  168.      You may now run OLVIEW in local mode to test for proper operation by
  169.      entering the following line at the DOS command prompt:
  170.      
  171.              OLVIEW /P0 /DDIR.LST      (that's /P zero not Oh!)
  172.      
  173.      OLVIEW should fire right up and run.  Follow your nose, and play around
  174.      with it for a few minutes.  If OLVIEW cannot find a filename that you
  175.      know exists on your system, examine the contents of the DIR.LST file
  176.      for improper and/or missing path name(s).
  177.      
  178.      Create a DOOR available to your callers called OLVIEW.  This MUST be a
  179.      door using DOORWAY.  The calling batch file must change to the OLVIEW
  180.      run directory before calling DOORWAY, and DSZ & DOORWAY must be on the
  181.

  187.      DOS path.  The line that fires off DOORWAY/OLVIEW should look something
  188.      like this:

  190.              DOORWAY xxxx /B: /O: /K:V /V:D /POLVIEW.EXE /Pn /DDIR.LST
  191.      
  192.      Where xxxx indicates the doorinfo file format/name or COM port, and
  193.      n = the port number that the modem is on.
  194.      
  195.      Make the text file OLVBULL.TXT available as a bulletin on your board.
  196.      
  197.      The above instructions are very terse, but outline all the steps
  198.      necessary to get OLVIEW airborne.  If this doesn't work, well...
  199.      then I guess you will have to R.T.F.M.

  206.      INTRODUCTION
  207.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  208.      I run a medium size graphics oriented BBS (about 440mb of GIFs available
  209.      for download).  OLVIEW came about after having countless callers request
  210.      a way to view GIFs while online with my board.  With the release of
  211.      version 4 of Jay Wherley's GIFDESK, this became possible.  The OLVIEW
  212.      door has become a very popular feature on my board, saving my callers
  213.      countless hours spent downloading undesirable GIFs.
  214.      
  215.      After several months of use I began to get requests from other SysOps
  216.      in my area for a copy of the door because my callers would ask them if
  217.      a copy of OLVIEW could be installed on their boards.  Never having
  218.      written BBS software for use by anyone except myself, I decided to
  219.      write some documentation for OLVIEW, and toss it out into the world
  220.      and see what happens.

  222.      The type of BBS software you run is purely a matter of personal
  223.      preference.  I purposely wrote OLVIEW to run under DOORWAY so that it
  224.      may be installed and run on any BBS type supported by DOORWAY (as most
  225.      popular BBS types are).
  226.      
  227.      My personal choice of BBS software is RBBS-PC, so in the spirit of
  228.      RBBS-PC I have released OLVIEW as freeware.  You are free to use and
  229.      distribute OLVIEW as you wish as long as the distribution archive and
  230.      documentation are not modified.

  266.      SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS & LIMITATIONS
  267.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  268.      Four external pieces of software are required for successful
  269.      installation and use of OLVIEW by you and your callers.
  270.      
  271.      The most important program in the OLVIEW system is Jay Wherley's
  272.      GIFDESK (included in the OLVIEW distribution archive).  GIFDESK
  273.      creates the preview GIFs that are downloaded by your callers.
  274.      GIFDESK is an incredibly useful graphics utility that among
  275.      other things will take one or more GIF(s) and display them
  276.      simultaneous on a single screen.  GIFDESK has an environmental
  277.      variable that will cause it to direct it's output to a screen file
  278.      instead of your video card (i.e. BBS mode, see the GIFDESK docs for
  279.      more info).  This capability is the key to providing the on-line view
  280.      function.  Many thanks to Jay Wherley for providing GIFDESK, and for
  281.      making it freeware!
  282.      
  283.      OLVIEW was written to run under Marshall Dudley's DOORWAY program.  In
  284.      case you are not familiar with DOORWAY, it is a program that is called
  285.      from DOS allowing you run almost any program as a door on a BBS.  It
  286.      also provides a superior drop to DOS function as well.  I highly
  287.      recommend DOORWAY.  It is a mature piece of software, that is
  288.      thoroughly debugged, and works quite well.  No SysOp should be without
  289.      it.
  290.      
  291.      When called, DOORWAY hooks it's self on to the appropriate DOS
  292.      interrupts, and loads another program (specified on the calling command
  293.      line), and allows the BBS caller to interact with the program in real
  294.      time and in full screen mode.  Watchdog carrier detect, remaining time
  295.      available, ANSI graphics, and keyboard inactivity are all monitored and
  296.      maintained by DOORWAY.  DOORWAY is an incredible shareware value at
  297.      $30.00 (current price at the time of this writing), considering that
  298.      other commercial programs that provide this capability cost $100s of
  299.      dollars.
  300.      
  301.      The oldest version of DOORWAY that OLVIEW has been tested with is 2.12
  302.      and is the minimum version required for proper operation.  The current
  303.      release (I believe) is version 2.20.  Version 2.20 provides greater
  304.      speed due to improved screen handling.  Version 2.20 is highly
  305.      recommended.
  306.      
  307.      OLVIEW also requires Chuck Forsburgs' DSZ to provide file transfer
  308.      service.  The current version of DSZ that I am running is JULY 91, but
  309.      any recent version should work fine.  The copy of DSZ I use is
  310.      registered, I cannot guarantee results with unregistered copies.
  311.      Please suppport shareware by registering your copy of DSZ.
  312.      
  313.      The last software requirement is Bill Parquet's SHOWGIF.  SHOWGIF is
  314.      a self-extracting .EXE file (included in the OLVIEW distribution 
  315.      archive) that is downloaded by your callers and installed on their
  316.      systems to allow viewing of the preview GIFs created by OLVIEW.
  317.      SHOWGIF is a TSR that is loaded before running a terminal program.
  318.      The TSR examines the incoming data stream during a download, and if a
  319.      GIF is detected, SHOWGIF drops into VGA graphics mode and decodes the
  320.      incoming GIF directly to the screen as it comes off the wire.  SHOWGIF

  327.      then returns to the terminal program when viewing is complete.  Be
  328.      advised that SHOWGIF is a first-class shareware program.  Please
  329.      encourage your callers to support shareware by registering their copy
  330.      of SHOWGIF!

  358.      DOS version 3.3 or better is required.  OLVIEW has not been tested
  359.      under DOS 5 as of this writing.  (Anybody out there running DOS 5 with
  360.      OLVIEW?  Let me here from you!)

  362.      If the caller is viewing 4 GIFs and the path names to your download
  363.      directories are over 15 characters in length, a command line exceeding
  364.      128 characters in length can be passed during the shell to GIFDESK.
  365.      Under this circumstance the fourth GIF will be omitted from the preview
  366.      GIF.
  367.      
  368.      GIFDESK version 4 does not support the GIF89a format in BBS mode.
  369.      
  370.      
  371.      HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  372.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  373.      A VGA DISPLAY IS NOT REQUIRED FOR PROPER OPERATION OF OLVIEW ON YOUR
  374.      BBS SYSTEM!
  375.      
  376.      A hard disk IS required, and the faster the better!  Approximately
  377.      900k of disk space is required to hold the runtime software and build
  378.      the screen file and preview GIF in.  There is also a usage log
  379.      maintained so that you may observe usage patterns and the GIF names
  380.      that are viewed by your callers.

  388.      The operational speed of OLVIEW is GREATLY enhanced when run on a RAM
  389.      disk.  I strongly recommend you do so if you have the RAM to spare.
  390.      
  391.      286/386 class machines are recommended for obvious reasons.  OLVIEW has
  392.      not been tested on XT class machines, although I can think of no reason
  393.      why it would not work on an XT, other that running slow...
  394.      
  395.      
  396.      HOW OLVIEW WORKS
  397.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  398.      OLVIEW is loaded and executed by DOORWAY when the door is entered by a
  399.      caller.  OLVIEW allows the caller to specify a maximum of 4 GIF file
  400.      name(s) that s/he wishes to preview.  OLVIEW verifies that the GIF(s)
  401.      specified exist in a valid download directory, and then shells to
  402.      GIFDESK, passing the caller's view format preferences and the name(s)
  403.      of the GIF(s) to include in the preview GIF.  GIFDESK then builds a
  404.      screen file of the GIF(s) and creates a preview GIF containing an image
  405.      of the caller's GIF(s) and returns to OLVIEW.  OLVIEW then shells to
  406.      DSZ and sends the preview GIF to the caller using the transfer
  407.      protocol of his/her choice.  The caller then uses Bill Parquet's
  408.      SHOWGIF to view the preview GIF while it downloads.  DSZ returns to
  409.      OLVIEW and the preview is complete.  The process may be repeted as
  410.      many times as the caller's time remaining allows.
  411.      
  412.      The entire process requires just 3 to 4 minutes when running on
  413.      286/386 class machines and fast hard drives, even when very large GIFs
  414.      are selected for preview.
  415.      
  416.      As you can see, OLVIEW requires other software to run.  Actually,
  417.      OLVIEW is just a stupid little program that does some screen handling,
  418.      verifies the existence of a few files, and shells to other programs
  419.      that do all of the hard work.
  420.      
  421.      It may seem complicated on the surface, but OLVIEW installs easily (if
  422.      you have DOORWAY installed and figured out <GRIN>), works very
  423.      reliably, and your callers will love it after they learn to use
  424.      SHOWGIF.
  425.

  427.      INSTALLATION
  428.      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  429.      The installation of OLVIEW is a fairly simple and straight forward
  430.      task.  Let's take the following directory structure as an
  431.      installation example:

  449.      Create a new directory called OLVIEW off of the directory that your
  450.      BBS software runs out of, as shown above.  Move the distribution
  451.      archive OLV100.ZIP into the new OLVIEW directory and unpack it.  The
  452.      archive should yield the following files:

  465.      Begin by deleting the BBS specific files not needed, and unpack the
  466.      one specific to your BBS type.  Then unpack GIFDSK40.ZIP and cruise the
  467.      .DOC file if your not familiar with GIFDESK.  If you run a graphics
  468.      board, you will find GIFDESK a great tool to have in your arsenal!
  469.      
  470.      As explained in the GIFDESK docs, GIFDESK has an environmental setting
  471.      that will cause it to direct its video output to a 'screen file'
  472.      instead of your video card.  Enable this feature by adding the
  473.      following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: SET GIFDESK=FILE (no spaces
  474.      around the equal sign, SET GIFDESK = FILE will not work!).  Make sure
  475.      that DSZ.COM and DOORWAY.EXE are on the DOS path as well, and then
  476.      reboot your system so that the changes will take effect.

  478.      
  479.      COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS
  480.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  481.      OLVIEW has two command line parameters that must be passed: Port
  482.      Number and Directory List File name.  OLVIEW is called as shown below:
  483.      
  484.                      OLVIEW /P<port #> /D<dir list file name>
  485.      
  486.                      Example:  OLVIEW /P2 /DDIR.LST
  487.      
  488.      The /P parameter specifies the port number that the modem is connected
  489.      to for the calling node.  This number is passed to DSZ as the port
  490.      number to open and transfer the preview GIF file on.  It must agree with
  491.      the port number that your BBS uses (or the port number that the calling
  492.      node operates on in a multi-node configuration).  Valid values are 0 
  493.      (zero) through 8.  If port number zero is specified, then OLVIEW will
  494.      operate in local test mode, allowing execution from the DOS command
  495.      prompt for testing.  If port zero is specified, the shell to DSZ is
  496.      by-passed.  If a value less than zero or greater that 8 is passed,
  497.      then an error message is issued and OLVIEW terminates.
  498.      
  499.      OLVIEW does not support non-standard serial I/O addresses at this time.
  500.      Remaping of your I/O is possible with Ray Gwinn's X00 fossil driver.
  501.      (a truly superior fossil, and FREE!)  If there is a demand for it, this
  502.      feature could be added to a future version of OLVIEW.

  510.      The /D parameter specifies the file name containing the list of path(s)
  511.      that will be searched each time a caller enters a GIF file name to
  512.      preview.  The file name specified here (DIR.LST) must be found in the
  513.      OLVIEW run directory (you may specify a full path name pointing to
  514.      another directory and/or file name, but why bother?).  If the file
  515.      specified is not found, OLVIEW issues an error message and terminates.

  518.      THE DIRECTORY LIST FILE
  519.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  520.      The Directory List File (specified in the /D command line parameter)
  521.      conveys three pieces of information to OLVIEW:
  522.      
  523.              1)      The contents of the BBS identifer line (ID line)
  524.                      displayed below the header on the OLVIEW run screen.
  525.      
  526.              2)      The ANSI color that the the ID line is displayed in.
  527.      
  528.              3)      The directory(s) that will be searched for a GIF name
  529.                      specified by a caller.
  530.      
  531.      An example of the Directory List File (DIR.LST) is shown below:

  538.      This example will produce the following results:
  539.      
  540.      The string "!!Really Cool BBS With All The HOT GIFs!!" will be
  541.      displayed below the header area on the OLVIEW run screen.  The ID line
  542.      will be displayed in bright white.  The directories GIFBIG, GIFMED, and
  543.      GIFSML will be searched (in that order) for the file names given by
  544.      your callers.  If a file name specified by a caller is not found in one
  545.      of these directories, an error message will be issued to the caller
  546.      telling him/her that the file name given cannot be found.
  547.      
  548.      The valid values for the 2 digit number in character positions 79-80
  549.      of the ID line are as follows:
  550.      
  551.                     01 - Blue                       08 - Gray
  552.                     02 - Green                      09 - Bright Blue
  553.                     03 - Cyan                       10 - Bright Green
  554.                     04 - Red                        11 - Bright Cyan
  555.                     05 - Magenta                    12 - Bright Red
  556.                     06 - Brown                      13 - Bright Magenta
  557.                     07 - Normal White               14 - Bright Yellow
  558.                                                     15 - Bright White
  559.      
  560.      If any value other that the ones listed above are used, OLVIEW will
  561.      display the ID line in color 15, Bright White.

  572.      with a line feed/carrage return.  The file MUST contain a minimum of 2
  573.      lines.  The maximum number of lines is 101, (100 search directories).

  575.      Using the ASCII editor of your choice, edit the DIR.LST file to make
  576.      it conform to your system's configuration and directory structure.
  577.      
  578.      
  579.      TESTING OLVIEW IN LOCAL MODE
  580.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  581.      You are now ready to run OLVIEW in its local mode to test for proper
  582.      operation.  Make sure that an ANSI graphics driver is active on your
  583.      system.  Make the OLVIEW directory the current directory and type
  584.      OLV_TEST at the DOS command prompt to test OLVIEW in local mode.  The 
  585.      OLV_TEST.BAT file contains the following line:
  586.      
  587.                 OLVIEW /P0 /DDIR.LST        (that's /P zero not Oh!)
  588.      
  589.      OLVIEW should fire up and present you with the opening screen.  Select
  590.      the Z option for file transfer.  OLVIEW will then present you the
  591.      display format option screen.  Select the SMALL format.  OLVIEW will
  592.      then request the name of the first GIF file to preview.  Enter 'BEE.GIF'
  593.      and press ENTER (you did move the BEE.GIF file included in the OLVIEW
  594.      archive into one of your download directories didn't you?).
  595.      
  596.      OLVIEW should hit the hard drive briefly and then display the 1st GIF
  597.      file name at the bottom of the screen indicating that it successfully
  598.      located BEE.GIF.  Now press ENTER to begin the view process.  OLVIEW
  599.      will then shell to GIFDESK and GIFDESK will begin creation of the
  600.      preview GIF.  GIFDESK reports its progress on screen while its "doing
  601.      its thing".  After GIFDESK builds the preview GIF, OLVIEW will display
  602.      a message prompting you to begin your download and then will inform you
  603.      that local mode operation is in effect.  The shell to DSZ will be
  604.      by-passed.  OLVIEW will then ask you if you want to do it again.  You
  605.      have now successfully verified operation of OLVIEW.
  606.      
  607.      You should continue to play with OLVIEW and verify that it can
  608.      successfully locate GIFs in all of your download directories.  If
  609.      OLVIEW informs you that a GIF file can not be found (that you know
  610.      exists in a valid download directory), then go back and take a look at
  611.      your DIR.LST file.  Chances are that you omitted a directory or 'fat
  612.      fingered' the entry.  Also check the OLVERROR.LOG for information
  613.      concerning invalid path names.
  614.      
  615.      You are now ready to set up a DOOR to provide your callers access to
  616.      OLVIEW and turn them loose on it!
  617.      
  618.      
  619.      SETTING UP DOORWAY
  620.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  621.      If you have DOORWAY fully functional on your BBS and are familiar with
  622.      its operation then skip to the next section.  If not, then read on
  623.      and I'll try to point you in the right direction and do what I can to
  624.      make DOORWAY as painless as possible...

  632.      Because OLVIEW was designed to run with DOORWAY, specific instructions
  633.      for setting up DOORWAY on every BBS type in the world are beyond the
  634.      scope of this document.  I will do my best to describe some of the
  635.      pitfalls you may find, and provide some general guidelines for
  636.      configuring your door.  (Please see Appendix A and the BBS specific
  637.      archives for further info.)
  638.      
  639.      Begin by obtaining a registered copy of DOORWAY.  The easiest way to
  640.      accomplish this is a call to the DATA WORLD BBS as noted in the
  641.      software requirements section.  DATA WORLD takes visa/mc, and the whole
  642.      thing takes about 15 minutes.  You walk away with a 'key' that is used
  643.      to activate the registered features in DOORWAY.  Print the docs
  644.      included in the DOORWAY archive and READ THEM!  This is your best bet
  645.      to get DOORWAY up and flying quickly.
  646.      
  647.      DOORWAY is a complicated program, having over 50 command line and
  648.      doorinfo parameters that can be passed to it.  The biggest problem in
  649.      using DOORWAY is the doorinfo file that is passed to DOORWAY to tell it
  650.      things like the port number the modem is on, the callers time
  651.      remaining, whether or not a fossil driver is in use, etc.  DOORWAY was
  652.      originally written to run with PCBOARD.  If you use PCBOARD you are
  653.      home free!  If not, well your screwed then... (no not really!).  There
  654.      are a lot of little utility programs floating around that will convert
  655.      a doorinfo file for a given BBS type into the 'generic' format that is
  656.      read by DOORWAY (a DOOR.SYS file).
  657.      
  658.      One such example of this can be found in the RBBS.ZIP archive 
  659.      (DOORCVT.BAS).  This program will convert an RBBS doorinfo file into a
  660.      DOORWAY DOOR.SYS generic file allowing DOORWAY to plug into RBBS and
  661.      run with no problem.  It is a stupid little program that I wrote in 15
  662.      minutes that converts one ASCII file format to another.  If you fail in
  663.      locating a conversion program for your BBS type, then please contact
  664.      the me via FidoNet (1:123/57), or my board, and I'll do my best to
  665.      write you one.
  666.      
  667.      I offer this because I want OLVIEW (and DOORWAY) to be able to run on
  668.      every kind of BBS that wants it.  Be prepared to provide me with
  669.      detailed information about the doorinfo file format created by your BBS
  670.      (complete with photocopied documentation and an example of your
  671.      doorinfo file on diskette).  Let me make on thing clear here:  The
  672.      onus is on YOU to provide me with ALL of the information I need to
  673.      write the conversion program, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!
  674.      
  675.      
  676.      CALLING DOORWAY & OLVIEW FROM A BATCH FILE

  678.      If you run a BBS type that requires a door to be called from a batch
  679.      file, I will try to provide an example of how this is done here.

  699.      The file begins by running a conversion program (DOORCVT) that converts
  700.      an RBBS type doorinfo file to the DOOR.SYS format.  It then copies the
  701.      DOOR.SYS file into the OLVIEW run directory, changes to that directory,
  702.      and fires off DOORWAY/OLVIEW.  The command line parameters passed to 
  703.      DOORWAY are as follows:
  704.      
  705.              SYSF    The characters 'SYS' indicate that a generic doorinfo 
  706.                      file is being used.  The 'F' character indicates that a
  707.                      fossil driver is in use (if you don't use a fossil,
  708.                      omit the 'F').  This parameter is the toughest one to
  709.                      figure out, and will require some experimentation on
  710.                      your part...
  711.      
  712.              /B:     This parameter deals with the screen handling on line
  713.                      25.  Through expermentation this was found to be the 
  714.                      best setting.
  715.      
  716.              /O:     Overrides the DOORWAY title screen. (registered version 
  717.                      only).
  718.      
  719.              /K:V    Prevents the DOORWAY dead man timer from kicking the
  720.                      caller out of OLVIEW during long downloads.
  721.      
  722.              /V:D    Enables direct screen write mode and echos the run
  723.                      screen to the remote.  Again, through experimentation 
  724.                      this was found to be the best setting.
  725.      
  726.      /POLVIEW.EXE    The program that DOORWAY is to load and run (OLVIEW).
  727.      
  728.              /P2     Passed as a command line parameter to OLVIEW, indicating
  729.                      that port two should be passed to DSZ as the com port to
  730.                      use for file transfer(s).
  731.      
  732.        /DDIR.LST     Passed as a command line parameter to OLVIEW, indicating 
  733.                      that the file DIR.LST contains the list of directories 
  734.                      to be searched for caller requested GIFs.
  735.      
  736.      See the DOORWAY documentation for further details on this subject.
  737.      
  738.      On some systems it may be necessary to modify the /K: parameter on the
  739.      DOORWAY calling command line.  This will be necessary if you have a 
  740.      problem with the keyboard inactivity timer causing DOORWAY to bailout 
  741.

  749.      One final note:  If you run your BBS in DESQview, make sure the the 
  750.      'VERTULIZE TEXT' mode is enabled in the window that you run your BBS in.
  751.      
  752.      At this point you should set up a door on your board called OLVIEW and 
  753.      use whatever method you wish to test it for proper operation.
  754.      
  755.      
  756.      TELLING YOUR CALLERS ABOUT OLVIEW
  757.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  758.      The last step in installation is introducing your callers to OLVIEW.
  759.      If your BBS has a news file that is displayed at logon, whip up a file
  760.      introducing OLVIEW and explain that they should see the new bulletin
  761.      (created in the next step) for further information and download the
  762.      file OLUSER.DOC for instructions on using OLVIEW.  Be sure to move the
  763.      OLUSER.DOC file to a valid download directory and to post the new file 
  764.      in your file listings.
  765.      
  766.      A boilerplate file is provided for you to make a system bulletin from 
  767.      (OLVBULL.TXT).  It basically explains what OLVIEW is, and how to to use 
  768.      it.  Install this file in your bulletin system.  Feel free to edit the
  769.      file any way you wish, or trash it and write your own.  It is merely
  770.      provided to save you some time when installing OLVIEW.

  772.      
  773.      FILES CREATED BY OLVIEW
  774.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  775.      During normal operation OLVIEW will create several files.  These files
  776.      are explained here.
  777.      
  778.      
  779.      NEXT.NUM        This file contains the next preview GIF number.
  780.                      OLVIEW will create the preview GIF file named as
  781.                      VIEWnnn.GIF, where nnn is a number between 1 and 999
  782.                      (i.e. VIEW55.GIF).  You may reset the number used to
  783.                      build the next preview GIF name by changing the number
  784.                      in this file with a standard ASCII text editor.
  785.      
  786.      OLVERROR.LOG    This file is written into when OLVIEW experiences
  787.                      runtime errors.  See the section on error messages for 
  788.                      further information.
  789.      
  790.      OLVUSE.LOG      Each time a caller uses OLVIEW, an entry is written
  791.                      into this file indicating the time/date and the GIF(s) 
  792.                      viewed.  You may look at the contents of this file to
  793.                      determine usage patterns and the GIFs being viewed by 
  794.                      your callers.
  795.      
  796.      GIFDESK.CMD     This file is spawned each time OLVIEW shells to GIFDESK 
  797.                      and is used to tell GIFDESK the format the caller
  798.                      wishes the preview GIF to be built in (small or medium).
  799.      
  800.      NULL.DSZ        This file is redirected screen output from DSZ.  It is 
  801.                      necessary to redirect DSZ's screen output to a null
  802.

  808.                      file because of DOORWAY.  You may observe the contents
  809.                      of this file to see the results of the last file
  810.                      transfer.

  813.      ERROR MESSAGES & THE ERROR LOG
  814.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  815.      The errors detected by OLVIEW fall into two categories: FATAL ERRORS
  816.      and NONFATAL ERRORS.  FATAL ERRORS will cause OLVIEW to (usually!)
  817.      write an entry into the OLVERROR.LOG file, inform the user that a
  818.      problem has occurred, and terminate execution.  NONFATAL errors, on the
  819.      other hand, will not terminate execution.  The user is informed of the
  820.      situation (if necessary), and prompted for corrected input.
  821.      
  822.      At this time, only two major errors are trapped and written into the
  823.      OLVERROR.LOG file:
  824.

  830.      The above entries indicate that you have placed an line in the DIR.LST
  831.      file that is pointing to a nonexistent path name (in this case,
  832.      C:\XXX\).  Remove the offending line from the DIR.LST file or change the
  833.      entry to a valid path name to correct the problem.  This is not a fatal
  834.      error.

  840.      The OLVERROR.LOG entry show above is the worst thing that can happen.
  841.      This is the 'catch all' error trap.  It indicates that a serious error
  842.      of some sort has occurred, and execution can no longer continue.  When
  843.      this happens the caller will see the following message:

  849.      If you get any errors of this sort, please save the OLVUSE.LOG and the 
  850.      OLVERROR.LOG files, and I will attempt to help you fix your problem.

  890.      MULTI-NODE BBS OPERATION
  891.      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  892.      Most multi-node BBS operations run in DESQview.  I have not operated
  893.      OLVIEW on a multi-node board myself, but one of the beta testers
  894.      did, running OPUS in DESQview.  The major requirement when running in
  895.      DESQview is to make sure that the window that each node runs in has
  896.      the 'Veritalize Text' option set to yes.  This assures that DOORWAY
  897.      will properly echo the screen to the caller.
  898.      
  899.      The other major point is that each node MUST have it's own, unique, run 
  900.      directory.  This is necessary because GIFDESK cannot share the screen 
  901.      file with other copies of GIFDESK at the same time.  If you have 2
  902.      callers in the OLVIEW door simultaneously, then each node must have it's
  903.      own copy of the OLVIEW software to run and build it's work files in.
  904.      
  905.      This may be accomplished by creating 2 or more directories called
  906.      OLVIEW1, OLVIEW2, etc...  Have node1 change to the OLVIEW1 directory
  907.      when it fires up, node2 change to OLVIEW2, and so on...
  908.      
  909.      This scheme seems to work fine.  This is not a very efficient use of
  910.      disk space (granted), but the run directory is relatively small, and 
  911.      multi copies of it will not burn that much disk space.  Please let me 
  912.      here from you if you successfully run 2 or more copies of OLVIEW on your
  913.      board, and I will describe your setup in the SYSOP documentation.
  914.      
  915.      I have no experience with OLVIEW running in a LAN environment either.
